CHILD SPONSORSHIP | Hengheng’s Life in ICC
Sitting in this wheelchair meant Hengheng could see the world around him very differently for the first time in his life.
We first met 14-year-old Hengheng in late 2019, when he was transferred from the Government Welfare Centre to Enquan Yuan, ICC’s group homes for children with moderate to severe disabilities.
Like many of the children who had just arrived, Hengheng’s health condition was weak, and he was completely bedridden. His communication with others was also limited. He could only say simple words like “yes” and “no”. “When Hengheng first came to us, he was shy and did not have any selfconfidence,” our Enquan Yuen staff commented.
Wheelchair Support
Together, our caregivers and international volunteers carried an assessment on Hengheng and concluded that one of his first needs was to have a wheelchair to help support him. Despite limited resources, the team used all the tools they had and reconfigured a wheelchair specifically for Hengheng’s use.
Sitting in this wheelchair meant Hengheng could see the world around him very differently for the first time in his life. Not only could he observe his surroundings from a very different perspective, but having this mobility meant he could participate in group activities and attend therapy sessions which he had not been able to before.

A Milestone for Hengheng
Our team of therapists also set various goals for Hengheng to work towards, to help improve his fine and gross motor skills.
Each session began with a round of games to help Hengheng engage his senses, and he loved to interact with the people around him as he played. What a difference this must have been for a child who had been bedridden for most of his life!
The therapy sessions made a vast improvement in Hengheng’s mental and physical health. We could see how excited he was when he picked up his toys using his newly acquired skills. More excitement came as the team completed the activities with a round of applause for the great effort Hengheng had put in within a short time. Two months into his therapy sessions, Hengheng was able to feed himself. He would often hold up his spoon while waiting patiently for his meal to be served.
“Hengheng loves to smile and greet the people around him. He is also very focused and doesn’t easily get distracted. Because of this, he has made tremendous progress in his therapy sessions,” his caregivers commented.
His caregivers also discovered Hengheng has a gift of empathy. He could relate well with others; for example, he would look concerned if he saw one of the children in the room get upset.
“Within a year at ICC, he has changed a lot!” His caregiver reflected on the achievements Hengheng had made.
Your generous support has made this transformation possible in Hengheng’s life. We are thankful for your partnership which has helped many of our children live a life full of love, hope and opportunity!
