Recently, Tanli celebrated her 24th birthday. In the last 21 years, we have had the privilege of watching her grow into the beautiful young lady that she is today.
During the lockdown in February and March, Yunhua and Tangang could not go to work and they spent their time learning to do crafts at home. The finished pieces were showcased at the 100th-anniversary celebration of the Chinese Communist Party in our care centre in June.
One of our donors, who owned a swimming pool company in China, heard our Founder David Gott’s sharing, and helped install a saltwater pool in autumn 2015 for our care centre in Hengyang. The swimming pool is open during July and August when the weather is hot and humid. For our young people living with disabilities, swimming has now become one of their favourite activities!
We first met 14-year-old Hengheng in late 2019, when he was transferred from the Government Welfare Centre to Enquan Yuan, ICC’s group homes for children with moderate to severe disabilities.
Recently our Changsha Area Manager, Li Ming, was voted “Most influential charity worker” in Changsha. Known to the children as “Papa Li”, Li received over 30,000 public votes, coming first in the “Most Influential Charity Workers” category.
Yiyi came into ICC’s care in November 2017. She joined our Little Pandas home where seven children live in family-style care. The last three years have had their challenger for Yiyi, times of frustration as well as delight.
When the local government put all welfare centres under closed management in February due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the young adults in ICC’s community-based group home had to move back to Hengyang Care Centre.
When Yezhen first moved to ICC’s community-based group home from the Government Welfare Centre in November last year, she bowed her head and was withdrawn. Yezhen who is visually-impaired, previously lived at the government welfare centre for many years, and moving into a new environment can be very scary. Our caring staff worked to help the new children feel comfortable and welcomed.
