Hengyang Playground Wins Award

ICC & RehabAid Society share in international honour

On 18 July 2015, long-time ICC volunteer, Anna Jien, and Calvin Luk of Hong Kong's RehabAid Society, accepted an award from the Design & Health International Academy Awards 2015 as part of the 11th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in Hong Kong.

The "Highly Commended" award in the International Mental Health Project category recognised the design of the brand-new inclusive playground for children with special needs. Located in ICC's Hengyang project and designed by Calvin Luk and Kevin Au of the RehabAid Society of Hong Kong, this project is the culmination of a labour of love.

The playground was funded by an ICC supporter from the United States. Sheila Bair is a former high ranking finance official for the U.S. government, and she and her husband adopted a girl from Hengyang several years before ICC was working there. Over the years, Ms. Bair has given to various ICC programs, but felt she also wanted to complete a legacy project in honour of her daughter.

The commissioning of "Yang Yang's Playground" made this project a first of its kind in China -- a playground built for children of all abilities, including swings and slides for wheelchairs. On 11 May 2015, Bair's daughter, Colleen, officially opened the playground.

The children of the Hengyang Project now play there on a regular basis. The smiles on the faces show the evidence of how life-changing this playground is.
